Town of Salem: A Look at the Game Modes

Due to the recent release of the game on steam, I decided that it was time that I did a blog post talking about Town of Salem. I have been playing this game for quite a while now, and I have been enjoying it for the most part. Town of Salem is a relatively new, free browser based game that was released in 2014. In Town of Salem you play as a member of a town, and the goal of the game is to lynch or kill the evil members of the town. However, since this a multiplayer game, players get the chance to play as either the town members, mafia members or the serial killer.

The game includes five very fun and distinctive game modes with a 15 player maximum that allow players to have a variety on what they want to play at the time. The five game modes include:

Classic Mode: Classic mode is the simplest form of the game, whereby there are three mafia roles, Godfather, Mafioso, and Framer, one Jester which is a neutral role, and eleven town roles including two random town roles: a town killing and a random town member.

Classic mode is a must for new players because it lays down the rules for the players, and it is very simple because it does not add any of the more advanced classes. Personally, I do not really enjoy playing Classic mode because I am not really a fan of having the roles set in stone, and I find the random aspect of the All Any game mode a lot more fun. I still think that it is a good game mode for rookies, but I think I will stick with All Any.

Custom Mode: Custom mode is a mode whereby the player can pick the roles that will be in the match, and can invite friends to join them in their match.

Custom mode can be pretty fun if you have a lot of friends to play with, but in my experiences with it, it just gets ruined by the other people in the lobby due to the fact that you can vote to repick the host, and a lot of people who play custom mode constantly repick the host if they don't see the roles that they like.

Rapid Mode: Rapid Mode is just as the title implies, it is the same thing as classic mode, but time transitions between night and day are a lot faster, and town meeting sessions are also cut down by a sizable amount.

Rapid Mode is a great choice if you want to play ToS but you are short on time, or if you just find the time it takes for night and day to be too long. I wouldn't recommend this mode for people who do not have a firm grasp on the mechanics of the game, because the game mode is a LOT faster than classic mode, and you have to be really quick with every action that you do.

All Any: All Any is the most popular game mode found in ToS. All Any is a mode which has fifteen any slots, and the any slots pick from any one of the thirty roles found in the game.

All Any is by far my favorite game mode found in ToS, and if I am being honest, it is the only game mode that I play. The reason being is that it due to the randomness of the game mode, you really have no idea what is going on, which leads this game mode to feel somewhat more tense. Another reason why I enjoy this game mode over the rest is due to the fact that at least for me, the people who play this game mode tend to be more friendly and generally more funny than the rest of the community. My final reason for liking this game mode over the others is because of all of the roles that are opened up in this game mode. In classic mode you do not have access to being the Arsonist, a fun role which is similar to the Serial Killer, but it is harder to kill your targets, and you also do not have access to the newly added Werewolf class, Witch, Amnesiac, and all of the other fun roles in the game. Going back to the randomness, did I mention that you can have six mafia in this game mode? Awesome, right (except if you are a town member)? If I am being honest, you have not played ToS until you have played this game mode, but due to some of the more advanced roles being in this game mode, I do not recommend it for new players, but once you get the hang of the game, give All Any a try.

Vigilantics: The least popular game mode found in ToS. Vigilantics is a mode where there are two teams: a team comprised of five witches, and a team made up of ten Vigilantes. The goal of the game is for the witches to kill all of the Vigilantes, and for the Vigilantes to kill all of the Witches.

Even though this game mode is hardly played, I personally think that it is really fun. If you thought that classic mode was intense, then this game is a whole new level. Vigilantics is difficult because you do not know who your teammates are, so you have no idea who is a witch and who isn't. This game is also intense because of the Vigilante class. The Vigilante class is a class that "takes matters into their own hands" like a vigilante would. The Vigilante has three bullets that they can use to kill three people over the course of the nights, sounds easy right? Well the twist is, if a Vigilante shoots another town member, they won't be able to shoot anyone anymore, and they will commit suicide the following day. This makes the game mode a lot harder, because not only do you not know who is a Vigilante and who is a Witch, but you also have to make tough decisions on who you will shoot. The Witch class can mind control people and make them kill their target. This adds to the difficulty because if a Vigilante is mind-controlled and they shoot another Vigilante, they will commit suicide. Personally I would stay away from this game mode, because no one really plays it, and it takes a long time to find a lobby, but if you are wanting to try a new game mode out, give it a try.
